"First check your sources list and make sure that the packages.linuxmint.com repository does not have "universe" at the end. You can open that file by running in terminal:
$ sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
If it does, remove the word "universe" and then click the save button to save the file and close the file.
Open terminal and enter:
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
You should now be able to run your updates."
If this doesn't work for you then please post a copy of your /etc/apt/sources.list file here. If it does work, then please confirm here so others can refer to it in future.
